Uparatnas: Alternative Gems
In addition to the
nine main, astrological, Jyotish gemstones, Vedic gemology uses alternative
gems as well (in Sanskrit uparatnas),
especially to substitute those main gems that are very costly in two
or three carats sizes ( namely diamonds and
rubies). It is found, however, that
an alternative gem has a
milder, astrological effect than the correspondent main gem.
